Trade liberalization and credit constraints: Why opening up may fail to promote convergence

چکیده
Recent evidence suggests that despite opening up a country for trade, the productivity gap between developed and emerging economies often does not close. This paper examines credit constraints as one channel held responsible for hampering convergence. Specifically, we extend a Melitz and Ottaviano (2008) type trade model with variable mark-ups to allow for endogenous technology adoption. We consider a framework with two countries that potentially differ with respect to credit market development. Firms have the option to adopt a more efficient technology by paying some fixed cost. A fraction of the fixed technology adoption cost has to be financed externally: in a less developed credit market, the costs of external finance and thus the total costs of technology adoption are higher. A reduction in trade costs raises demand abroad (pro technology-adoption effect) but reduces demand at home because of import competition (anti technology-adoption effect). We find that trade liberalization increases economic performance, that is average productivity and technology adoption, in both countries but that the productivity gap widens. Simulations show that the welfare gap widens too. Opening up without sufficient access to external funding thus fails to promote convergence. JEL classification: F1, O33, O16

Small-Scale Firms and Trade Liberalization
We explore how integrating into the world economy affects the incomes of manufacturers in less developed countries (LDCs). We show that cutting back trade barriers has asymmetric effects on the incomes of the two typical groups of entrepreneurs. Whereas access to foreign markets benefits those entrepreneurs who are able to run large-scale factories, credit-rationed entrepreneurs running a micro...
متن کاملCredit Constraints, Technology Choice and Exports: A Firm Level Study for Latin American Countries
In this paper constraints on technology choice and credit access are introduced into the Melitz (2003) model in a dynamic setting in order to explain the factors that limit the benefits to a firm from trade liberalization. Theoretical analysis shows that firms face credit constraints depending on their initial productivity and the cost of the credit. As a result, credit constrained firms may ne...

Traditional supply chain inventory modes with trade credit usually only assumed that the up-stream suppliers offered the down-stream retailers a fixed credit period. However, in practice the retailers will also provide a credit period to customers to promote the market competition. In this paper, we formulate an optimal supply chain inventory model under two levels of trade credit policy with d...

We study how nancial frictions and the saving rate shape the long-run e¤ects of trade liberalization on income, consumption and the distribution of wealth in nancially underdeveloped economies. In our model, regardless of whether the capital account is open or not, trade liberalization reduces the share of wealth in the hands of entrepreneurs and may well reduce steady state consumption and i...
